Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic Resigns After Train Accident
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic has resigned following a tragic train accident at Novi Sad station that claimed the lives of 15 people and sparked nationwide protests.
Vucevic’s resignation came a day after President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans for a „comprehensive and urgent government restructuring“ in response to demands from striking university students in Serbia.

„I Must Not Escalate Tensions in Society“
Prime Minister Vucevic stated that he decided to step down after witnessing reports of attacks on students protesting in the northern city of Novi Sad and the regional capital.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Vucevic said, „The government must demonstrate the highest level of accountability. To avoid further escalating tensions in society, I made the decision I have just announced.“
24-Hour Blockade
On Monday, demonstrators intensified their pressure on authorities by staging a 24-hour blockade of a major traffic junction in the capital, Belgrade.
The blockade was part of ongoing protests demanding accountability for the fatal train accident in Novi Sad, which critics attribute to widespread government corruption. Serbian farmers on tractors and thousands of citizens joined the blockade, following weeks of public outrage over the incident.
Largest Challenge to the Government in Years
This campaign of street demonstrations represents the most significant challenge to the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) government’s grip on power in years. Protesters have been calling for justice and systemic changes to address the corruption and negligence that many believe led to the deadly accident.
President Aleksandar Vucic’s announcement of government restructuring and Vucevic’s resignation mark a turning point in this nationwide movement, which continues to gain momentum.
