Trump Says He Will ‘Most Likely’ Grant TikTok a 90-Day Extension
President-elect Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he is likely to grant TikTok a 90-day extension to allow his incoming administration to evaluate the situation after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on the app.
“The 90-day extension is something that will most likely happen because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully,” Trump said during a call with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker. “It’s a very significant situation.”
He added that a formal decision would “probably” be announced on Monday when he is sworn into office for his second term as President of the United States.
The possibility of an extension stems from a bipartisan bill passed by Congress in April, which gave TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, 270 days to divest from the app or face a ban from U.S. app stores.
In response, TikTok released a statement warning it would “go dark” on Sunday unless President Biden intervened. However, the White House dismissed this as a “stunt,” emphasizing that the app does not need to take immediate action before Trump assumes office.
“We have seen the most recent statement from TikTok,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Saturday. “It is a stunt, and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to act in the next few days before the Trump Administration takes office on Monday.”
Trump had previously indicated on Friday that his administration would assess TikTok’s future once he officially assumes office. For now, the White House has stated that the decision regarding the app will rest with the incoming Trump administration.
