Cruise Ship Passengers Shocked by ‚Snow Cone‘ Costumes Mistaken for Ku Klux Klan Outfits
P&O Cruises Australia faced backlash after passengers were left in shock by staff dressed in costumes that resembled Ku Klux Klan (KKK) attire. The incident occurred during a Christmas-themed event aboard a cruise ship that departed from Melbourne on December 19 for a week-long voyage to Tasmania and Kangaroo Island.
What Happened on the Cruise?
Video footage shared on social media captured eight staff members dressed in all-white outfits, complete with pointed hats and masks, walking behind a Santa Claus costume. The costumes were part of a tug-of-war event held during the ship’s Christmas family fun day, where employees from different departments donned festive outfits.

A passenger described the scene, stating, “I think everyone was in shock. My husband said, ‘Get the camera.’ A lady in front of me, her jaw dropped, and people were saying, ‘What the hell?’ It was being called the ‘KKK cruise.’”
P&O Cruises Responds
P&O Cruises Australia quickly issued an apology, stating that the costumes were meant to represent snow cones and not intended to offend. The company’s communications director, Lynne Scrivens, clarified during an interview with 2GB radio:
“They were taking part in a Christmas family fun day as part of our Christmas crew activities. The housekeeping staff decided to dress up as snow cones. The idea that this was a KKK cruise is just ridiculous. No one can seriously think that was their intention.”
Scrivens emphasized that the staff were “horrified” and “very apologetic” once they realized the unintended resemblance of their costumes to KKK robes.
Social Media Reactions
The incident sparked debate on social media, with some criticizing the oversight and others defending the crew’s intentions. While some passengers were visibly upset, others pointed out that the costumes were likely a misunderstanding rather than a deliberate act.
Lessons for Future Events
This incident highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness, especially for businesses operating in diverse, international environments. P&O Cruises assured passengers that it would review its event planning processes to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
By addressing the issue promptly and apologizing for the unintentional offense, P&O Cruises aims to rebuild trust with its customers while ensuring inclusive and respectful celebrations aboard its ships.
