German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has stressed the need to preserve the unity of the European Union following the AfD’s victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. Wadephul warned that those advocating an exit from the euro area would put the EU’s cohesion, prosperity, security and freedom at risk.
Speaking at a joint press conference with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Berlin on September 8, 2026, Wadephul said:
“Those who advocate leaving the euro area are putting cohesion within the European Union and, consequently, our prosperity, security and freedom at risk. Every threat to the EU must be avoided.”
Wadephul also warned against calls to return to purely national solutions.
“I must urgently warn against going back down the path of national solutions. Only the European Union gives us the opportunity to ensure approximately fair conditions for our industry on the global market. That is why any threat to the European Union must be prevented.”
The AfD won the Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, 2026, by a clear margin. The party is known for policies advocating Germany’s withdrawal from the euro area. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel has repeatedly expressed support for such a position.
Wadephul’s comments have reignited debate over the possible consequences of an AfD-led state government for Germany’s position within the EU and for international investment. Asked about concerns that investments could be affected if the AfD came to power, Wadephul responded: “I hope that won’t happen.”
