Brussels / Berlin — NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has highlighted Germany’s contribution to allied security, announcing that Germany is strengthening NATO’s eastern flank with a new armored brigade to be permanently stationed in Lithuania.
In addition, the 1st German-Netherlands Corps has taken on a new command role on NATO’s eastern flank. The move is intended to strengthen the alliance’s military readiness and coordination capabilities along its eastern border.
Germany is also moving rapidly to increase its defense spending. The country plans to allocate 3.5% of its GDP to core defense spending by 2029. This target would come well ahead of NATO’s broader, higher defense-spending commitments set for 2035.
The developments are being viewed as part of NATO’s strategy to strengthen its military presence on the alliance’s eastern flank amid Russia’s war in Ukraine and rising tensions in the region.
Germany’s permanent deployment of the brigade is aimed at strengthening deterrence in the Baltic region and reinforcing NATO’s ability to respond to potential security threats.
